    The Brains of Babies: A Surface Based Approach To Study Cortical Development in Term and Preterm Human Infants

    Half a million infants are born before term gestation each year in the United States. Although advances in newborn medicine have increased survival rates of very preterm infants to almost 90%, surviving preterm infants are at increased risk for developing lasting neurologic impairments. In order to develop a plausible neuroprotective strategy it is imperative that we improve our understanding of normal cortical development and develop tools to evaluate injury. Using a surface based approach we have characterized normal cortical development in healthy term infants and analyzed abnormalities associated with preterm birth. Accurate cortical surface reconstructions for each hemisphere of 12 healthy term gestation infants and 12 low-risk preterm infants at term equivalent postmenstrual age were generated from structural magnetic resonance imaging data using a novel segmentation algorithm. Data from the 12 term infants were used to establish the first population average surface based atlas of human cerebral cortex at term gestation. Comparing this atlas to a previously established atlas of adult cortex revealed that cortical structure in term infants is similar to the adult in many respects, including the pattern of individual variability and the presence of statistically significant structural asymmetries in lateral temporal cortex, suggesting that that several features of cortical shape are minimally reliant on the postnatal environment. Surprisingly, the pattern of postnatal expansion in surface area is strikingly non-uniform; regions of lateral temporal, parietal, and frontal cortex expand nearly twice as much as other regions in insular and medial occipital cortex. Differential expansion may point to differential sensitivity of cortical circuits to normal or aberrant childhood experiences. The pattern of human postnatal expansion parallels the pattern of evolutionary cortical expansion revealed by comparison between the human and the macaque monkey. Finally, in comparing term and preterm infants, region-specific alterations in cortical folding in the preterm population were found. The most striking shape differences were present in the orbitofrontal and inferior occipital regions with reductions in folding in the insular, lateral temporal, lateral parietal, and lateral frontal cortex. Overall these findings improve our understanding of normal cortical development and help elucidate the potential pathways for cortical injury in preterm infants

    “Inspiring Imps”: programme evaluation of a football intervention targeting mentally ill health services users through a professional football club

    The Active People survey (2010) shows that only 6.5% of disabled individuals participate in sport and exercise 3 times per week, compared with 16.5% of able bodied adults in the UK. Individuals with recognised disabilities have long been excluded from mainstream society. Particularly in sport, disability athletes can be afforded minority status and are treated as such (Nixon, 2000: In Handbook of Sports Studies, edited by J. Coakley and E. Dunning. London: Sage). This stigmatisation can be particularly acute among participants with diagnosed mental or psychological disabilities. Previous research concluded that sport can have positive psychological and social benefits, including improved well-being, motivation and social confidence (Crone and Guy, 2008: International Journal of Mental Health Nursing. 17, 197-207.). The aim of the present study was to investigate the feasibility of a 6 week exercise programme targeting mental ill health service users aged 16+. A weekly 2 hour session of football was introduced to promote health and wellbeing in the target group. Partners included county Football Association and a professional football club. The project enhanced local partnerships and partnerships with other professional football clubs. The key remaining aim is to ensure a sustainable “legacy” is achieved to ensure the continuation delivery of the project. The feasibility of the present study will be assessed using programme evaluation. Programme evaluation uses programme theory to produce a structured framework for assessment of the project (Rossi et al 2004; Evaluation: A systematic Approach. London, Sage). This allows a clear and logical progression from planning to implementation. Participant attrition rates and attendance records will be collected. These data will be supplemented with semi-structured interviews with participants and project stakeholders to assess programme development. The expected overall project outcome is to produce shared learning practice on similar interventions nationwide

    Weak measurement and control of entanglement generation

    In this paper we show how weak joint measurement and local feedback can be used to control entanglement generation between two qubits. To do this, we make use of a decoherence free subspace (DFS). Weak measurement and feedback can be used to drive the system into this subspace rapidly. Once within the subspace, feedback can generate entanglement rapidly, or turn off entanglement generation dynamically. We also consider, in the context of weak measurement, some of differences between purification and generating entanglement

    Jason E. Hill is a doctoral candidate in art history at the University of Southern California, where his dissertation considers the art and photography of PM. His research has been supported by fellowships from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS, the Terra Foundation, and the Swann Foundation. In June 1940, the progressive New York City tabloid PM published an image from the Soviet/German front that had just been transmitted by radio from Moscow to New York. The wartime exigencies of communications across Europe and the primitive state of the radiophoto technology at the time of transmission combined to produce in this image a striking hybridity, manifest in its status as both photographic and, because visibly retouched, handmade. Activating the very inability to identify its medium, PM deployed this image as a component within its larger project of challenging the prevailing, and often dubious, journalistic discourse of photographic objectivity. In PM’s pages, this radiophoto was shown to function not as objective reportage, but rather as merely another gambit in the wartime photojournalistic contest of credibility

    Adopting national vegetation guidelines and the National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) framework in the Northern Territory

    Guidelines and core attributes for site-based vegetation surveying and mapping developed for the Northern Territory, are relevant to botanical research, forestry typing, rangeland monitoring and reporting on the extent and condition of native and non-native vegetated landscapes. These initiatives are consistent with national vegetation guidelines and the National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) framework. This paper provides a synopsis of vegetation site data collection, classification and mapping in the Northern Territory, and discusses the benefits of consistency between the guidelines, core attributes and the NVIS framework; both of which has an emphasis on the NVIS hierarchical classification system for describing structural and floristic attributes of vegetation. The long-term aim of the NVIS framework is that national attributes are adopted at regional levels to enable comparability of vegetation information within survey and jurisdictional boundaries in the Northern Territory and across Australia. The guidelines and core attributes are incorporated in current and future vegetation survey and mapping programs in the Northern Territory

    We describe a “Hardware as a Service (HaaS)” tool for isolating pools of compute, storage and networking resources. The goal of HaaS is to enable dynamic and flexible, user-level provisioning of pools of resources at the so-called “bare-metal” layer. It allows experimental or untrusted services to co-exist alongside trusted services. By functioning only as a resource isolation system, users are free to choose between different system scheduling and provisioning systems and to manage isolated resources as they see fit. We describe key HaaS use cases and features. We show how HaaS can provide a valuable, and somehwat overlooked, layer in the software architecture of modern data center management.
